Glacier Deglace’

Thousands of Mylar strips salvaged from bubble mailing envelopes were affixed to 99 square feet of adhesive film. Resembling a melting glacier, the piece reminds us both of our culpability and responsibility towards our environment.

Amy Scofield uses beauty as bait, but in the abstract. Without representational imagery, her work is both conceptual and critical. Scofield harvests her art materials from castaway detritus and transforms it into sometimes unsettling objects that often take months of focused handiwork to build. The message Scofield sends is that we can each find ways to take responsibility for the mess we make. The true beauty of Scofield’s work is in the act of taking ownership with determination and heart. For Scofield, the art-making process begins when she discovers a heap of discarded material and imagines how it can be revived to create striking forms.” — Jeffrey Keith, Curator, Storm Warning: Artists on Climate Change and the Environment, Vicki Myhren Gallery, Denver
